St Francis Xavier Cathedral, Adelaide - Sound Remediation
In July 2026 the ceiling of St Francis Xavier ringing chamber was adjusted (see the photo above) providing a dramatic improvement in audibility. Following the initial work there was quite a bit of rope rattle, fixed by filling the ceiling bosses with lead. The next step is to balance the sound level of the various bells which is planned for early September. Then, in October, we hope to soften some of the harsher sound and reverb.

St Francis Xavier Cathedral, Adelaide – closing for several months from 3 May 2015
St Francis Xavier Cathedral is closing from 3 May 2015 due to the installation of a pipe organ. Don’t worry – arrangements have been made so that we can ring during the ANZAB festival!
The Cathedral will be closed for several months. If you are in Adelaide between May and September 2015 and wish to ring, please contact us through – it may be possible to arrange some ringing depending on the stage of construction.
Some information on the project:
The pipe organ is a 1927 Casavant Frères. It has been restored by Wakeley Pipe Organs in Melbourne.
The Cathedral loft will be altered to make room for the organ's 3,300 pipes, some of which measure six metres in length. The organ will be positioned in the gallery either side of the beautiful stained glass rose window, behind stunning new casework and façade pipes. The casework has been designed to complement the Cathedral’s architectural features.
Originally housed in St Jean de la Croix Church in Montreal, Canada, the pipe organ was built by renowned Canadian organ builders, the Casavant brothers, and is expected to greatly enhance the Cathedral's role as a venue for major civic events and music recitals.
