Adelaide Anniversary Weekend July 2022

Harvey Bagot and Christine Hodge

The weekend included a few anniversaries not on the original invitation. For example, 2022 is 70 years since the first South Australian tower-bell peal, rung in Walkerville.

Two of the ringers in that peal were at the celebratory dinner, namely Hervey Bagot and Catherine Hodge nee Lamphee (see photo). Catherine stopped ringing when she was married. Her sister, Philippa, also at the dinner, is better known to current ringers.

The St Andrew's Walkerville part of the weekend included a peal on the Friday evening, prompting an appreciative email from the minister living adjacent to the church. It was a fast peal and conductor Christopher O'Mahony was showing off his "speeding fine", in the form of badly blistered hands, at the dinner.

I was part of the Sunday morning band that turned up to ring for the 9:30 service at Walkerville, and keen to try the bells following their re-hanging. We did ring, but unfortunately not for a service as the minister had contracted COVID so cancelled all services at short notice.

There will be a fuller report of the weekend with its many highlights in Ringing Towers. I echo the vote of thanks at the dinner, to Phil Goodyer for his organisation and spreadsheets. I had a great weekend. Peals and QPs from the weekend may be viewed here, and the dinner program, with details of many anniversaries here.
